We Have Time for You
There is nothing worse in dentistry than being in tremendous pain from a toothache or having some other dental emergency and not being able to schedule an appointment with your dentist. Our doctors reserve openings in our schedule every business day so we have the time needed to help patients in pain.

Common Dental Emergencies:

Broken Tooth: If a tooth is broken, gently clean or rinse the area around the break. Apply a cold compress to the face to reduce swelling. If more than half of the tooth is broken, contact our office immediately for further care.

Knocked-Out Tooth:

  • Permanent Teeth: Locate the tooth and handle it only touching the crown (the top part). Rinse it gently with cold water if dirty, but avoid scrubbing or touching the root. Attempt to place the tooth back into its socket, having the child hold it in place with a gauze pad or washcloth. If re-implantation is not possible, store the tooth in milk or cool water. Contact our office as quickly as possible—ideally within 30 minutes.
  • Primary (Baby) Teeth: These teeth are not re-implanted. The tooth fairy might visit a bit early!

Toothaches: Clean the affected area and rinse the mouth with warm salt water. Use dental floss to remove any food trapped between the teeth. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, as it can cause burns. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain. Contact our office for further guidance.

Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek: Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to stop bleeding. Use an ice compress on the injured area. If bleeding continues, seek immediate medical attention at an emergency room.

Objects Caught Between the Teeth: Use dental floss to gently remove the object. Tie small knots in the floss if needed. Avoid using sharp metal objects, and if you can't remove the debris, contact our office for assistance.

Bleeding After a Baby Tooth Falls Out: Fold a gauze pad or clean washcloth and have your child bite down on it to apply pressure. Keep it in place for 5-10 minutes, repeating as necessary to control bleeding.

Cold or Canker Sores: For occasional sores, vitamin E oil or over-the-counter treatments can provide relief. If the sores persist or are severe, contact our office about using a laser bandage for further treatment options.
